HYVÄÄ MERTEN VUOSIKYMMENTÄ!
Vuosi 2021 aloittaa merten vuosikymmenen. Tämän Unescon hankkeen tarkoituksena on saada kasvatettua merten tieteellistä tutkimusta, jotta saamme riittävästi informaatiota niiden tilasta ja sen kehityksestä.
Informaatiota tarvitaan, koska meret ovat maapallomme suurin ekosysteemi. Meret vaikuttavat voimakkaasti elämäämme ja tulevaisuuteemme täällä.
Imoca-luokka tekee kiinteää yhteistyötä Unescon kanssa. Vendée Globeakin käytetään sekä tutkimuspoijujen jättämiseen että näytteiden keräämiseen.
Siellä se nyt kerää tärkeää tietoa meren tilasta mm. ilmastonmuutoksen torjuntaa varten.

2021-2030 kuusi päätavoitetta ovat:
PUHDAS MERI, jossa saastuttajat tunnistetaan ja poistetaan.
TURVALLINEN MERI, jossa ihmiset ovat paremmassa turvassa onnettomuuksilta.
HYVINVOIVA MERI, jonka ekosysteemit on kartoitettu ja niitä suojellaan.
KESTÄVÄSTI HYÖDYNNETTY JA KESTÄVÄSTI TUOTTAVA MERI, jossa ruoansaanti varmistetaan.
ENNAKOITAVISSA OLEVA MERI, jossa ymmärrämme merten käyttäytymistä ja tilaa tulevaisuudessa paremmin.
LÄPINÄKYVÄ MERI, jossa on vapaa pääsy dataan, tietoon ja teknologioihin.

The Decade will provide a responsible global pathway for development. The Ocean is our planet’s largest ecosystem. It stabilizes climate, stores carbon, produces oxygen, nurtures unimaginable biodiversity, and directly supports human well-being through food, mineral, and energy resources as well as provides cultural and recreational services. Unfortunately, despite improved management and conservation actions, the United Nations First World Ocean Assessment found that much of the Ocean is now seriously degraded. As the world population will reach an estimated 9 billion people by 2050, impacts on the ocean associated with human activities will increase. Action can only be effective if it is based on sound knowledge informed by science. There is an increasingly need to find scientific solutions that allow us to understand the changes taking place in our ocean, and to reverse its declining health.

Unesco-tiedeyhteistyön lisäksi Ari Huusela on sitoutunut Ocean as Common -järjestön mertensuojeluperiaatteisiin ja on mukana rakkaan kotimerensä, Itämeren suojelussa yhdessä John Nurmisen Säätiön kanssa.
