Imoca Ocean Masters -kilpailusarjan uusin tulokas New York- Vendée valmistautuu lähtöön. Kisa on täynnä symboliikkaa. 

Kilpailu starttaa Hudsonjoelta, pilvenpiirtäjien kupeesta ensi sunnuntaina 29.5. klo 18 Suomen aikaa. Lähtöreitti piirtyy Manhattanin eteläkärjen ja Vapaudenpatsaan väliin. Maaliin tullaan IMOCA60-veneiden klassisimpaan satamaan, Les Sables d’Olonneen. Se toimii maailman vaativimman purjehduskilpailun Vendée Globen lähtö- ja maalipaikkana.

New York-Vendéen startin erikoisuutena on, että kisaorganisaatio on turvallisuussyistä antanut kippareille luvan ottaa yksi miehistön jäsen mukaan starttiin ja ensimmäisten mailien ajaksi. Joella olevan suuren trafiikin takia tämä “active crew member” saa auttaa manöövereissä aina Verrazano Narrows Bridgelle saakka, joka on noin 2,5 mailin päässä starttilinjasta.

Matkaa Isosta Omenasta Vendéen maakunnassa Ranskassa sijaitsevaan Les Sables d’Olonneen on 3.100 merimailia eli 5.600 km. Eurooppaan purjehditaan reippaissa myötätuulissa, matalapaineiden reunoilla ratsastaen. Nopeimpien IMOCA-kippareiden ennustetaan saapuvan perille 7-8 vuorokaudessa.

On sekä huippuhienoa, että huippukamalaa lähteä huomenna New Yorkiin. Kamalinta tulee olemaan se, kun 14 kilpakumppania lähtee ja itse jään. Mahtavinta on se, että pääsen takaiskusta huolimatta edustamaan Suomea ja yhdessä kumppaneideni kanssa aistimaan kisan maailmanluokan tunnelman. Olen  iloinen voidessani esitellä lajia ihan konkreettisella tasolla.

The New York – Vendée starts next Sunday

Briefly what has been released before

The Finnish skipper Ari Huusela who’s objective was to race his first IMOCA60 Ocean Masters competition has faced a serious setback. He has no boat for New York-Vendee.

GBR44 which Huusela rented for New York-Vendée is now floating in the middle of Azores and Bermuda where the owner Richard Tolkien abandoned her. Tolkien himself boarded the cargo ship in The Transat bakerly race from Plymouth to New York.
